Sharon has a theory about the activity of God that she calls “Holy Spirit Timing.” She says that at “those times when you really, really need to experience God, someone enters into your picture and in that person, God is revealed. Or those moments when we cannot explain how we knew that something was going to happen, or that someone was going to need us, but we knew.”
When I did my internship in Philadelphia, the pastor there, Gordon Simmons, regularly did door to door evangelism, and one day he told me that he knocked on a door and Holy Spirit Timing was at its best.
It seems as if the person who lived there was at the lowest point in her young life and that very moment she was praying that God would send her some kind of sign, to let her know that God really cared for her. And, she said that as soon as she finished this prayer, Pastor Simmons knocked on her door. And when she opened the door and saw a minister, she almost fainted.
What is Holy Spirit Timing?
Holy Spirit Timing, it happens to us all, you may have been thinking about a friend that you haven’t talked to in a while and that person calls on the phone, or you may have been lonely, and someone shows up at your hospital bed.
Holy Spirit Timing. You may have been doubting yourself, when someone tells you how much you have been a help to them, Holy Spirit Timing.
The Holy Spirit is active and alive in our lives every day. And the Holy Spirit talks to us in ways that sound, sometimes, a lot like the voices we hear every day.
But why? Why does this spirit seem to want to work in our lives, and what exactly is this Spirit stuff anyway?
Martin Luther Teaches us the Gospel
Well, as Luther puts it in the Small Catechism, The Spirit is that which helps us to hear the Gospel, and to know that this is Gods command. The Spirit, he says, is that which sanctifies us.
Luther says, “I believe that I cannot by my own understanding or effort believe in Jesus Christ My Lord, or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and kept me in true faith.”
He says, “I cannot on my own believe or come to God but through the Spirit”
It is the working of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives, that helps reveal to us God, and Gods plan.
It is the working of the Spirit in our everyday lives that helps us to know that Jesus Loves us and cares for us.
It is the workings of the spirit in our everyday lives that helps us know that in spite of all of the violence and evil and terror and death, and heartbreak of this world, that in spite of all of that, God is working through us, and through Gods church to bring about a better day.
To bring about that day when we will all stand as sisters and brothers and siblings of one another
Black children and White children, Asian children and Latino children, Americans, Africans, Europeans, Latinos and people of Middle Eastern descent, the whole world united in the love of God.
Acts 2:2-4 says that “Suddenly there was a noise from heaven like the sound of a mighty wind!… The Holy Spirit took control of everyone, and they began speaking whatever languages the Spirit let them speak.”. And just like the wind, the Spirit is everywhere, and we cannot see it and we cannot not own it, and we cannot control it no matter how hard we try.
No matter how strong our fortresses are, no matter how thick or how high our walls have been built, no matter how wide the chasm we have created, the Spirit is there like a mighty wind to blow through them, and to bring us God, and to bring us TO God.Tags: Holy Spirit, Martin Luther, Pentecost
